JOTA Activities at the Boree Regatta

Two activities are available for youth members in which to participate, in 30 minute time slots.

"On Air" activity

Youth members have the opportunity to use amateur radio equipment to communicate with other guides and scouts, either locally or around the world. The radios being used will consist of;

  • High Frequency (short wave) transceiver capable making contacts locally, around Australia or overseas, depending on propagation conditions
  • Very High Frequency (VHF) transceiver used for making contacts within the greater metropolitan area, or around Australia or overseas using Echo Link technology
  • Ultra High Frequency (UHF) transceiver used for making contacts around Australia or overseas using Digital Mobile Radio (DMR) technology

"Radio Direction Finding"

Radio Direction Finding, sometimes commonly known as "fox hunting" is the skill of locating a hidden radio transmitter, using a directional antenna and portable radio receiver. Youth members are given instruction on using direction finding equipment, then setting out in small groups to find the hidden radio transmitter, located within Boree Regatta activity area.
